Arrest of Former Police Officer Christian Butterfield On June 3, 2024, I ordered the commencement of an internal investigation into an incident involving Vero Beach Police Officer Christian Butterfield. The internal investigation was to focus on any possible policy violations regarding a traffic stop that occurred on June 1, 2024 shortly after 1 a.m. Upon review of Officer Butterfield’s Body Worn Camera, it was determined that a criminal investigation would be necessary. During the course of the internal investigation, Ofc. Butterfield resigned. The criminal investigation continued and Mr. Butterfield was ultimately charged with 1 felony count of tampering with evidence. Mr. Butterfield turned himself into the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office on June 19, 2024 and was released on a $10,000 bond. The internal investigation is still ongoing. Christian Butterfield was hired by the Vero Beach Police Department on 10/9/2023 and was assigned to road patrol. Please see the attached Affidavit for details.
